Optimism

More and more I have come to admire resilience.

Not the simple resistance of a pillow, whose foam

returns over and over to the same shape, but the sinuous

tenacity of a tree: finding the  light newly blocked on one side,

it turns in another. A blind intelligence, true.

But out of such persistence arose turtles, rivers,

mitochondria, figs–all this resinous, unretractable earth.

Optimismo*

Más y más llego a admirar la resiliencia.

No la resistencia simple de una almohada, cuya espuma

vuelve y revuelve a la misma forma, pero más bien la tenacidad

sinuosa de un árbol: al encontrar bloqueada la luz por un lado

da vuelta al otro. Una inteligencia ciega, cierto.

Pero de tal persistencia surgieron la tortuga, los ríos,

la mitocondria, los higos –todo aquella tierra resinosa y no replegable.
