I just saw an article that I had copied more than a year ago. It tells about a parrot called “N’kisi” that can use more than 900 English words properly. He uses verbs in the past, present, and future, and when he needs to express an idea for which he doesn’t have the right word he invents one. For example he calls his owner’s aromatherapy “pretty smell medicine”. He asked Dr. Jane Goodall, after seeing her in a photograph that included some chimpanzees, “Gotta Chimp?" You can hear him talk if you follow the link on this page. He even has a sense of humor and laughs.
The people who work with N’kisi, however, claim he has telepathic abilities. I am skeptical of this part of the story.
I’m taking up this theme again because I’ve had several conversations lately with people that consider the “lower” animals as lacking in thoughts, communication, culture, and rights. There are many studies these days that show how wrong this appreciation is.

Acabo de ver un artículo que copié y guardé hace más de un año. Se trata de un reportaje sobre un loro llamado “N’kisi” que cuya capacidad léxica en ingles excede 900 palabras, las emplea con plena conciencia de su significado y sentido de humor. Su uso de verbos incluye el pasado, presente y futuro e inventa términos cuando lo que quiere expresar rebasa su vocabulario –como también hacen los niños. Por ejemplo dice “bonita medicina de olor” para describir la aromaterapia. Cuando se le fue presentado a la Dra. Jane Goodall después de haberle visto en una foto que incluía chimpancés, N’kisi le preguntó: “¿Tienes un chimp?” Se le puede escuchar en inglés al seguir el enlace en esta página.
Quienes trabajan con N’kisi, sin embargo, dicen que tiene capacidades telepáticas, y no creo que hay que aceptar esta parte del cuento para encontrar sus habilidades lingüísticas sorprendentes.
Recojo el tema esta mañana porque he tenido varias conversaciones con personas que consideran a los animales “inferiores” como carentes de pensamientos, comunicación, cultura y derechos. Estudios (que no incluiré aquí por ahora) y la experiencia de personas que convivan con ellos demuestran lo contrario.
