These are some reflections in English and Spanish about democracy and how the clergy in Baltimore were able to calm the racial violence there.

Estas son algunas reflexiones en inglés y en español sobre la democracia y cómo miembros del clero en Baltimore fueron capaces de restorar algo de orden en aquella ciudad.

English:

For some time now I have been thinking that democracy needs to be re-thought. It shouldn't be necessary for people to confront the police, at great danger to themselves, in order to make ethical and civic statements. There should be more mechanisms for influence from below, in addition to the voting process.  Some strategies for making these confrontations fruitful do exist, one of which is the universally respected figure that brings concord. It is rarely possible to use it, but in this case the clergy in Baltimore were able to bring protesters and police together for the purpose of restoring some degree of peace. However, racial bias in maintaining order, which is the main issue, is still unsolved.

Español:

Desde algún tiempo he reflexionado sobre la necesidad de re-pensar la democracia. La confrontación peligrosa entre la policía y la gente no debe  ser obligatoria para expresarse ética y cívicamente. Debe haber mecanismos estructurales para la influencia “desde abajo”, más allá del voto. Una estrategia es el uso de la figura que se respeta universalmente, pero es raro encontrarlo; en este caso en Baltimore miembros del clero lograron juntar a los manifestantes y la policía para restaurar algún grado de paz. Sin embargo, el sesgo racial en la ciudad –y en otros lugares de los Estados Unidos, es el punto central, y queda sin resolverse.
