oor, poor Haiti, that ill-fated island where political manipulation, exploitation, poverty, disease and hurricanes pillage, pauperize, and demolish everything. Hanna and Ike didn’t just kill people outright: they left hunger and thirst in their wake. Help comes from Venezuela and the United States, but it isn’t enough.

I saw on CNN (the video is preceded by an add) how children are collapsing against razor wire after waiting three days in the sun to receive water and such basic foods as rice and cooking oil. There are so many questions: Why do the rescue workers need to protect themselves in such a barbarous way? Why was it possible to bring in razor wire but not enough food? Why aren’t the provisions more nutritive? Why hasn’t the world been able to help Haiti build up a more adequate infrastructure to prevent the effects of the hurricanes?

Haiti occupies half of the island Hispaniola, together with the Dominican Republic. Clearly there are huge differences between these two countries –only Haiti was so damaged. It is evident that it’s not just a problem of destructive “natural” events. Who benefits from keeping Haiti underdeveloped?

obre, pobre Haití. Es la isla de las desgracias donde la manipulación política, la explotación, la pobreza, las enfermedades y los huracanes saquean, arruinan y arrasan. Hanna e Ike no sólo mataron a las personas directamente con sus vientos e inundaciones, dejaron hambre y sed. La ayuda llega de Venezuela y los Estados Unidos, pero no es suficiente.

Vi en CNN (el video está precedido por una propaganda) como los niños colapsan contra alambre cortante mientras esperan tres días en el sol para recibir agua y alimentos tan básicos como arroz y aceite. Hay tantas preguntas: ¿Por qué los soldados necesitan resguardarse tras semejante protección? ¿Por qué no hay comida suficiente – y más nutritiva? ¿Por qué el mundo no ha ayudado a Haití a crear las infraestructuras básicas de prevención contra los efectos de los huracanes?

Haití ocupa la mitad de la isla La Española, junto con la República Dominicana. Indiscutiblemente hay grandes diferencias entre estos dos países – sólo Haití fue tan devastado. Es evidente que no se trata exclusivamente de las fuerzas destructivas de la naturaleza. ¿Quiénes se benefician de esta situación?
