Reelection and participation / Reelección y participación

English

hen we were children, mama and daddy were almost unique beings, and even then, those of us that were luckier had grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends to mediate between our parents and us. Many of us, however, still dream that they will continue to protect us from the wolves under our beds. That’s why we tolerate political leaders that promise us security.

“Participate” has among its meanings to increase the number of people that are involved in political life. It’s not true that only one individual incarnates all the virtues of effective leadership.

Some leaders refuse to stay in power.

Source

For example Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, the great Roman general in the Fifth Century that conquered the Aequians, returned the symbols of authority and went back to his farm as a common citizen. George Washington, too, went back to his plantation alter winning the North American revolution against the English and serving one term as President of the United States. It is a model that has been followed by all the democratic presidents and first ministers that go back to private life after their years of public service.

Cesar, on the other hand, lied when he said he didn’t want to be emperor. Napoleon didn’t want to abandon his power either. The list of those that develop a real affection for the throne (or the presidential chair) is too long to repeat here; it’s enough to mention some contemporary leaders that have seized and retained command in their countries: Robert Mugabe, Fidel Castro, Kim Jong II and Pervez Musharraf.

An essential part of democracy is to change chief executives. Only the kings and dictators dominate their peoples for a lifetime. Henry Kissinger said that power is an aphrodisiac and an irresistible experience of coveting.

On the other hand the weak little creature Gollum-Gollum gave in to its enchantment, and called it “My Precious”; he was trapped, rabbit-like, the the beam of absolutism.

Nacional constitutions and citizen vigilance should protect us from the temptations of dictators. Otherwise we would all be at the mercy of the Gollum-Gollums of this world.

Blind loyalties / Lealtades miopes

Source / Fuente

English
There is something very worrisome that is happening in Venezuela. Peoples’ reactions to the Gaza situation are filtered by their local political loyalties. Those who support the present government here have a knee-jerk acceptance to everything that Hamas says, and the opposition believes everything Israel says. It has little to do with what is really happening over there. I don’t know how these interests have been able to capture our capacity for critical thought.

On the the BBC news page Paul Martin has described how the violence, hate and destruction that goes on between Israelis and Palestinians is truly a mutual tragedy. These situations don’t grow on sterile ground: there is always a long history in which diverse aggressors have created many victims, all of whom feel the need for vengeance.

Venus

English

In November, Venus and Jupiter approached each other spectacularly in the evening sky. In France Venus also approached the moon in a way that simulates a mirror image of the Turkish flag. Then at the end of december, from the Alpes Venus seemed to approach the moon even more.

I love to watch the stars. They installed a street lamp just in front of my porch, supposedly to keep thieves away, but the same lamp has stolen my Milky Way. I’m glad it seems to be burning out.

For those that are intrigued by how our ancesters looked at the stars there is this experience of the winter solstice from Newcastle in Ireland. This video , is long, but interesting. However due to the cloud cover, the phenomonon of how the first winter sun rays are captured by the ancient monument can't be really appreciated. The real experience can only be seen in clips inserted from 2007. For those that only want to see a quick picture, here is one offered by NASA (I suppose also from 2007).

From an article by Lisa Gans in http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lisa-gans/israels-thinking-may-prov_b_155154.html

The Huffingtonpost.

"Israel is a sophisticated state actor that can be counted on to read and react to shifting political trends. When seen in light of a possible policy change in Washington, the urgency and intensity of Israel's actions make more sense. Israel's leaders clearly felt that it was better for the country to take action now, with Bush in office, than to wait for a matter of weeks and be able to act with backing of the most watched new U.S. administration to take office since the state of Israel was founded. Rather than being a sign of support for the Gaza offensive, Obama's refusal to comment at all may suggest that, while he is unwilling to interfere in the White House's ability to conduct foreign policy, he may not be supportive of Israel's actions, and that he intends to take a different tone from the current administration tone in office. Thus, for those hoping that the U.S. might once again provide moral leadership in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there may be a silver lining to the tragic events unfolding in Gaza, as Israel's actions may suggest that it expects, as Hamas should too, greater pressure from the U.S. for serious concessions from both sides."

I have translated it to Spanish below.

Steps the incoming president can take to build a peace-based economy.

There is no need to repeat this article here because those who are interested can follow the above link. It is a memo to Barack Obama from Deepak Chopra, not only about how to achieve peace, but how to convert the U.S. economy. Since World War II it has been a system based on war, and huge fortunes have been made by producing, selling, and using machinery for killing others. While many die, some become very rich.

People I have shown this to have said that the suggestions are not realistic, but they are really humanity’s only hope.

Israel and peace / Israel y la paz

A silent Obama under wraps / Obama en silencio y empaquetado

English

How many times, when peace has reared its threatening head, has Israel saved the day by causing a new conflict? I wouldn’t be able to count them, but here are some examples I remember and that I got from a one-day perusal of the Internet:

1. Ariel Sharon’s visit to the Dome of the Rock in 2000. I have seen more or less three reasons given for this: a) Sharon, the then candidate and Likud leader wanted to emphasize Israel’s sovereignty over this area of Jerusalem, b) he needed to make a gesture that would appeal to conservatives and deal a blow to Netanyahu’s candidacy, and c) supposedly he wanted to offer a peace plan to the Palestinians. This last reason had only rhetorical value as other peace plans had recently been rejected.

2. A peace initiative, the famous “land for peace proposal” was proposed by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia in 2002 and reiterated in 2007 at the Riyaddh Summit; it was adopted by the Arab League. But Shimon Peres said in 2002 that before talking about peace, first terrorism had to be eliminated. This, of course, is an impossible goal, at least under conditions in which hostility begets hostility. Israeli Prime Minister Olmert continues to object to the parts of the agreement that require his country to stop its occupation of East Jerusalem and to resettle Palestinians. In November of this year the Sunday Times suggested that Barack Obama will support the plan (Mahnaimi, Uzi; Baxter, Sarah, 2008-11-16). This possible support by the U.S. president-elect may be one reason for the present Israeli offensive, because the Israelis feel that they have to make a big show of force before a more pro-peace government begins in the U.S.

3. Free elections: The Hamas party won 74 seats in the elections for the 132-seat Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006. Immediately Israel blocked Palestine access to its own tax money. It was finally released on the condition that it not reach the elected government. Israel also controls the Palestinian electricity, water, and communications systems and has restricted access to these resources.

4. Israel continues to control the passage of goods and people between Palestine enclaves and with Israel. This restraint has been criticized by many entities including the World Bank, the Oslo Agreement, Amnesty International, and even The Association for Civil Rights in Israel . The World bank informs us that ”The Oslo Accords provided that the movement of people and vehicles in the West Bank “will be free and normal, and shall not need to be effected through checkpoints or roadblocks.” (World Bank Technical Team, May 9, 2007).

5. The embargo: Justin Podur has said, “Israel has long concentrated the Palestinians in Gaza, with 1.5 million people in an area of 360 square kilometres. For years, Israel has prevented food, medicine, and energy from entering, but also paper, ink, books, and other basics. Palestinians in Gaza have to deal with the missiles that are killing them without any help from the outside world and without medical supplies. Gaza is out of medicine. The Israelis have targeted schools, mosques, and hospitals. 5 ambulances and 3 fire brigades are working to service all of Gaza - until the Israelis blow these up too.” (Justin Podur, Dec. 2008).

6. In a Z Magazine article, Dick Dearden says, “The majority of Israel's political establishment, including the governments of Sharon and Olmert, have spent many years preventing the emergence of a two-state solution through expanding settlements, the Separation Wall, a system of racist settler roads, gateways, and tunnels, which have resulted in two [peoples] living separate and unequal lives within the Occupied Territories themselves. Indeed, this was the conclusion of EU diplomats in Jerusalem in a suppressed report leaked before Christmas, as well as a more recent report by UN Human Right Special Rapporteur John Duggard last month. Israeli peace activists such as Jeff Halper from the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions are quite clear that ‘the two-state solution is now dead’” (Dick Dearden, June, 2006).

7. As I write this the present attack on the Gaza Strip has killed 360 people (data source) and 1,550 Palestinians have been wounded (data source). This is supposedly in retaliation for the death of four Israelis (only five Israelis in more than a year of Hamas’ rocket attacks, including these December deaths). The day before the attacks Israel rejected Hamas’ offer to extend the six month cease-fire (Phyllis Bennis, Dec., 2008). In another comment Josshua Frank said, ”Over the last seven years only 17 Israeli citizens have been killed by Palestinian rocket fire, which makes it extremely difficult for Israeli politicians, which are in the midst of an election, to argue that their response has been proportionate or defensible in any way (Frank, Dec, 2008).

[A postscript: Israel has again rejected a proposed cease-fire by the Palestinians (BBC, Dec. 31st)].

8. UN condemnations of Israel under Chapter 6: By this mechanism the United Nations can issue a warning in terms like: "The UN strongly deplores"..., "condemns"..., "declares invalid"... or "recommends...", but the resolutions are non-binding. That is, the UN is not required to act if the country they have signaled out for a reprimand does not recognize or take action on their content. Eighty-eight of these resolutions have been passed criticizing Israel and all have been ignored. Among the Israeli practices that have been condemned is the promotion of settlements on Palestinian land. These practices have also been condemned by Amnesty International.

9. Israel has a developed a profitable arms industry, both for domestic use and for international trade. It is said that its Uzi is popular with those that like submachine guns. Two of its major industries in this respect are the Israeli Weapons Industries and Israeli Military Iindustries. The government also receives arms “aid” from the United States, and buys arms from Germany and the U.S.; in the last month the U.S. sold one hundred F-16s to Israel for a total of over $3 billion ( Jonathan Reingold, Dec. 2008,). Frida Berrigan said in 2006 that, “…the United States provides 20% of the Israeli military budget on an annual basis, and then about 70% of that money that is given from the United States, from U.S. taxpayers, to Israel is then spent on weapons from Lockheed Martin and Boeing and Raytheon…. you have maybe ten weapons corporations in this country that have a stake in—essentially in Israel using its military arsenal so that it can be replenished again. And the great thing about this relationship with Israel is, Israel doesn’t have to pay for it itself. It comes directly from U.S. taxpayers in the form of foreign military financing, which is transferred to Israel, and then turns right back around and goes to Lockheed Martin or Raytheon.. (Amy Goodman interview with Frida Berrigan, July 2006).

[In a more recent article, Frida Berrigan has updated her appreciation of the effect of U.S. arms trade.]

World Bank Technical Team, May 9, 2007).

English

his will be my last journal posting about the Mayan route. I’m glad to move on because there are many other things I’d like to talk about, but, too, I hate to close such a lovely trip.

In these last days we have been accompanied by the vision of Venus y Jupiter that have come very close in the late-evening, early nighttime sky, brilliant and enigmatic planets that seem to block out all the nearby stars. Since I’m a bewitched stargazer (quite illiterate, though in astronomy and astrology) it’s been lovely to see.

There are two last places that need to be described in this journal: the Tulum beach and town and Playa el Carmen. Both depend on tourism.

From the town of Tulum I’ll just post some beach pictures, that is, the beautiful sunset colors.

And from Playa el Carmen I’ll show some street scenes and a view of the island Cozumel from the main shore.

And to end this journey, another image of the Mayan tree of life that shows the positions of their different gods among the branches and roots.
