Friday night thoughts

English

1. I almost never see movies until they hit cable TV. “Stardom” with Jessica Paré and directed by Denys Arcand, is only seven years old, practically rolling off the production line in terms of what I usually get to. It was so unusual, afterward I Googled it to look at what the critics had to say, and nobody seems to agree with how I felt about it. The NYT found it boring. Others try to find a real story about a believable character. For me it was an entertaining, derisive sequence of film snippets that sort-of tell a story, but mostly address the unreality of public personalities. It is cuttingly funny, because there are two visions, on one hand private and even sordid portraits of certain people, and on the other, the standardized remake that media coverage does of human relationships. They get all mixed up because the sordid gets filmed by an ever-present but invisible photographer. An especially comical but very brief fragment happens when an overly excited and breathless fashion reporter is brushed off by the main character Tina Menzhal, who at this point in the film is a bored and wealthy haut couture client. But there are others: several, for example, when Tina’s elderly husband jealousy yanks her away from the photographer, Bruce, in the process revealing the couple’s “real” relationship.

2. Climate change: So very worrisome. There seems to be a one in six probability that global warming will produce a permanent phenomenon called a “mega niño” in which the Amazon basin will dry up, eliminating the Earth’s major carbon dioxide drop. Are we ostriches or what?

3. A quote: “(a) … survey by the American Research Group found that 45 percent of the population support the US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Bush, with 46 percent opposed, and a 54-40 split in favor when it comes to Cheney.

The study by the private New Hampshire-based ARG canvassed 1,100 Americans by telephone July 3-5 and had an error margin of plus or minus three percentage points. The findings are available on ARG's Internet site.” (http://rawstory.com/news/afp/Much_of_US_favors_Bush_impeachment__07062007.html)

4. Harper’s (http://www.harpers.org/archive/2007/06/0081545) has a series of articles generally titled: “Undoing Bush: How to repair eight years of sabotage, bungling and neglect” that cover such topics as: the constitution, the courts, the civil service, the environment, science, the economy, the marketplace of ideas, intelligence, the military, diplomacy, and national character. How can any given administration make so many blunders in such a short time? It makes highly interesting reading and shows how major magazines are becoming positively radicalized.

How could this have happened? How could a combination of ignorance, wishful thinking, and bigotry / fanaticism have taken over in Jefferson’s constitutional democracy?

I wonder, too, if any future president or congress will want to give up the centralized powers that have been accumulated in these years. Each incoming administration will believe it will be able to use them wisely. Power is a comfort blanket. Anyway, before the current nuts in the White House attack Iran, everything possible must be done to impeach Cheney and his dauphin the Shrub.
