Tenemos que repensar totalmente el concepto de cárceles,
desde sus manifestaciones en Rusia hasta las de Ecuador, incluyendo las cárceles
"privadas" en los Estados Unidos -pasando por todo el globo terrestre
con la posible excepción de Holanda y Escandinavia-. Hasta ahora la cárcel es
sólo una cruda alternativa a la pena de muerte (que muchas veces concluye en
todo caso con la muerte del reo). ¿Queremos una sociedad más humana? ¿Es
apropiado usar la justicia como un instrumento de venganza y represión? ¿Deseamos
la rehabilitación social y psicológica del preso? Entonces en las prisiones hay
que practicar y enseñar la empatía, el amor y la salud física y emocional.

We have to
totally reconsider the concept of prisons, from its manifestations in Russia to
those in Ecuador, including the "private" prisons in the United
States – a reflection that goes all over the globe with the possible exception
of Holland and Scandinavia. Until now, jail is just a crude alternative to the
death penalty (which often ends anyway with the death of the inmate). Do we
want a more humane society? Is it appropriate to use justice as an instrument
of revenge and repression? Do we really aim at the social and psychological
rehabilitation of the prisoner? Then in our prisons we have to practice and teach
empathy, love and physical and emotional health.
