Northwest Passage and the polar bear / La abertura del noroeste y el Oso Polar

English

When I was a kid in school, the “Northwest Passage”, the shortcut between Europe and Asia through the Canadian Arctic that might join the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, was as mysterious and impossible as all the rumored secret passages in the Egyptian pyramids. Everyone knew that all the attempts the English U.S., and Canadian explorers had made to find it had failed and would always fail. The Artic was pristine, almost unknown, in short, God’s country where polar bears, seals, and Eskimos lived.

That of course has changed. Global warming affects the planet, and huge profits are to be made from letting it happen. The polar bears’ fate and the tropical islands that are already disappearing bother Great Power not at all.

The great melt is a geopolitical event of enormous magnitude. The significance of the Suez Canal in Egypt and the Panama Canal in Central America will diminish, along with these countries' political influence. And we have not begun to talk about the mining resources and petroleum there.
