Sense of humor / Sentido de humor

English

I suppose that it is trivial to talk about the thera-peutic value of humor because the subject appears in all the frivolous magazines. But as a result of a conversation with a very good friend I believe that it is necessary to reflect on the matter.

This topic may seem inappropriate when Pakistan is in mourning and so many other events are dangerous and tragic. But I believe that it has deep importance for humanity’s persistence. Perhaps the capacity to laugh even in difficult moments is something one develops with age. Young people are more tragic because they have not learned to “carry on”.

Of course, sadness is real and there are moments when the laughter is not an option, like when:

"There are blows in life, so strong... I do not know!
Blows like of the hatred of God; as if before them,
the undertow of all that has been suffered
saturates the soul... I do not know "

(Cesar Vallejo- literal translation)

But, as another friend said, life is a music that changes its key and time often.

I remember a dear Ecuadorian friend, one I haven’t seen for twenty years, who has sacrificed much defending her beliefs. Once, when she told us about a terrible episode in her life, she turned it into something tremendously funny. We listened to her tale and accompanied it with outbursts of laughter, but also we were aware of what all that laughter meant.

What did it mean? I am going to try to express those feelings in words:

First it enunciated a life posture: "I celebrate the fact that I could survive what happened and I am stronger than those harsh conditions."

Second, it indicates group sensitivity: "I celebrate your sharing these deep and complex feelings with me."

There must be many more hidden messages in that laughter. I read that the scientists have discovered that animals laugh. I could have told them so. My dogs do it. It must have intense evolutionary importance.

¡Yo no sé!
¡Yo no sé!”

(Cesar Vallejo)
